The days before polar night are a countdown you feel in your body.

I was in Hamnøy's small harbour in Lofoten. Cold, wet, the kind of raw that doesn't apologise. Only those who can bear it go out. But the light in these final hours before the darkness takes over completely — that light is worth every moment of discomfort.

I caught this through the curve of an arm. A fleeting, unplanned frame within a frame. A boat sits moored and still. The rorbu fishing houses line the wet dock, their small lamps glowing through the rain, lighting a path over the slick wooden planks. Quiet. And yet not quiet at all. Nature here is never silent. It breathes, it pushes, it reminds you it is in charge.

I looked at that boat and knew: it will go back out. Not today. But it will.

That moment through the lens confirmed how present I was. The permanent darkness was close. I could feel it arriving. And still, something in that harbour glowed.

I work in black and white because colour would answer too much. This scene lives in the grey. In the tension between stillness and what is coming.
