I captured this image during a winter storm — in the cold, in the silence, in the unsettling emptiness that comes when human presence thins to almost nothing. The roads here are harsh and unforgiving. Storms arrive without warning. Snow erases everything familiar. Nothing can be assessed. Nothing guaranteed.

A vehicle rushes past — blurred, anonymous, already gone. And there it stands: a small illuminated emergency call station, alone on the roadside. Silent. Waiting. Unmoved by everything around it.

I felt something close to fear when I stopped here. The kind of quiet that makes you wonder — what if this is the last car? What if someone needed that box tonight, in this storm, in this darkness, and nobody came?

That tension is what I photograph. Not the dramatic. Not the obvious. The moment just before — when something could go either way, and the landscape holds its breath.

I work in black and white because colour would soften what I need you to feel. The grey tones of a polar winter carry their own weight. I want you to feel the cold. The stillness. The faint, stubborn glow of a light that stays on for someone who may never arrive.
